Aim of this project is to design a community centre for the “Exarhia” neighbourhood, which is located in central Athens, Greece. The neighbourhood of “Exarhia” is located in the vicinity of the National Technical University of Athens, thus becoming a popular destination for younger citizents. The area of “Exarhia” is characterized by the citizent’s vivid interest concerning the public space and it’s communal character. Here many self-organised teams participate in a variety of activities, getting involved in the design of squares and small parks.
The designed community centre aims to provide shelter for such self-organised teams, offering citizents a public building, where they can develop their actions. This Community centre is designed as an open building, both to the neighbourhood and the surrounding areas. It will be available for members to gather for group activities, social support, public information and other purposes. The building is supplemented by an athletic facility and a public garden, which forms the new entrance to the nearby Strefis hill, one of the few green areas of Athens.
